2011 Planet Project: Nesting

The objective of the 2011 Planet Project is to increase children’s awareness of animal species and their habitats. Often we think only of birds building nests, when in fact many types of animals, like insects, mammals, and reptiles construct nests. Nests, webs, burrows, and dens provide shelter from the elements, protection from predators, an opportunity to lure prey, and a warm, safe environment in which to raise young. Many of these habitats are in danger due to environmental stresses. Students are encouraged to explore animal habitats and the environmental stresses some of them face as well as how we can avoid putting their homes in harm’s way. For this challenge, students will construct their interpretations of animal habitats, real or imagined.
